NY Times article a sober reminder that land trusts do wind up in court


A recent article in the New York Times reminds us that land trusts need to be prepared to take a case to court. The article was prompted by the Internal Revenue Service's approval this week of nonprofit status for Terrafirma, an insurance company for land trusts formed in 2011 by the Land Trust Alliance. This insurance program is a 'risk retention group,' a mutual insurance arrangement whose business is limited to insuring its members, all of whom are members of the Land Trust Alliance.
