Summer Camp and Outreach Educator

General Description

Maine Audubon’s summer programs include school aged and preschool day camp, family programs and outreach to other organizations. Our programs are designed to have a low camper to staff ratio that allows us for better small group instruction and discovery. As an educator, you will develop, teach, supervise and ensure a safe, cooperative and fun experience for all campers.  You will be able to teach natural history activities to our campers and be an ambassador to other organizations looking to learn about the natural world. As an educator, you will assist with training, supervising and mentoring high school students who are volunteering their time at camp.

Qualifications and Essential Duties

  • Must be at least 18 years old or older with an interest in Maine wildlife and habitats.

  • Have led or provided activities for children ages 3-12.

  • Knowledge of flora, fauna and ecological concepts (life cycles, food chain, leave no trace, green practices, etc.).

  • Be able to communicate with and be sensitive to the needs of children ages 3-12.

  • Friendly, engaging and able to share hobbies/interests through lessons (singing, dance, theatre, painting, etc).

  • Work with a team of adults and teens with humor, flexibility, compassion and understanding.

  • Have current adult/pediatric First Aid and CPR certification prior to the start of training.

  • Canoeing experience, retail and salt marsh ecology knowledge is a plus for other sanctuary needs.
     

Physical Activity & Requirements, Visual Acuity, and Working Conditions

  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, typing and lifting are movements that may be used but not limited to in each camp day.

  • Must be able to complete a medium workload.  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds for force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

  • Must have visual acuity to make general observations of facilities, structures, accuracy, thoroughness and neatness.

  • Must be able to work in environmental conditions.  Programs are run both indoor and outdoor.

Job Timeframe

Summer Season is from June 18-August 31, 2018. During this timeframe staff will:

Complete mandatory training, set-up camp, run camp and outreach programs, breakdown camp and review the season. Day camp runs Monday-Friday 9-3; staff are required to work from 8-4. Flexibility in schedule for possible outreach Monday-Sunday.

Pay range dependent on experience and qualifications.
