Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed

Youth Conservation Corps Coordinator

Job Description

The Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed was founded in 2001 as a citizen grass-roots effort to assist in the protection of local water quality. Within the 217 square mile area of the Cobbossee Watershed, there are 28 major lakes and ponds;

four of which are considered to have “impaired” water quality and 13 of which are considered to be “threatened” by the pressures of development and polluted stormwater runoff. The Friends educational and conservation programs aim to combat the two main threats to our waters: Invasive Aquatic Plants and Non-Point Source pollution.

The Friend’s Slow the Flow program educates water front property owners on the need for landscaping practices that slow and divert runoff, reducing the amount of soil, fertilizer and other nutrient heavy pollution that finds its way into our lakes, ponds and streams, causing algae to grow excessively (algae blooms). The Friend’s Youth Conservation Corps is a group of six highschool and colleged aged youth that work as a team to implement landscaping practices that will reduce the flow of nutrients into our lakes and ponds. Typical projects include planting bushes and shrubs along shorelines, spreading erosion control mulch and armoring the shoreline with rock to reduce erosion. Tools utilized for this work include wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and general hand tools. The YCC project season lasts from July 5th to August 10th in 2018, Wednesday through Friday, 8 am to 3 pm.

The Friends are seeking a responsible person to fulfill the position of Youth Conservation Corps Coordinator.
