Midcoast Conservancy

Maine Rural AmeriCorps Outdoor Adventure Member


Midcoast Conservancy seeks to protect critically important natural resources, improve the quality of life for residents of Midcoast Maine, and provide healthy outdoor adventure and learning programs for youth, adults of all ages, and families. Midcoast Conservancy was formed from merger of four conservation organizations in January, 2016.

The AmeriCorps member will facilitate adventure based programming at schools and Community Outdoor Adventure Hubs across Lincoln and Waldo Counties in Maine. Members will be responsible for curriculum/lesson design, instruction, and gear maintenance/repair associated with adventure based programming. Volunteer outreach and recruitment will also be a key responsibility of the AmeriCorps Members. The successful candidate will be supervised by the Director of Community Programs, and will partner with community leaders and volunteers to ensure the success of the program.

Pending funding, Midcoast Conservancy will host four Maine Rural Americorps positions, designed to work together as a team to support the work in rural communities of Midcoast Maine. As a member of that team, individuals will have the opportunity to work closely, and share housing, with other Americorps team members. Position will be based out of the Midcoast Conservancy office in Edgecomb with a significant portion of time spent at local schools and Community Outdoor Adventure Hubs.

The position is a 1700-hour service term as part of the Maine Rural Americorps program, full time (40 Hours/week) and requires periodic service on weekends and evenings. The desired start date is September 1st , 2018 and runs 11 months, ending on Aug 1st 2019.

Member Responsibilities

Curriculum design & Instruction

        With help from staff, key volunteers, and partners:

  • Develop curriculum for various disciplines  (i.e Trail running, mountain biking, kayaking , stand up paddle boarding, XC Skiing etc)
  • Instruct developmentally appropriate skill progressions
  • Design and implement lessons related to the specific discipline   

Outreach & Volunteer Recruitment

  • Facilitate volunteer open houses
  • Form relationships with key community members (e.g. school principals, town selectboard members, etc.)
  • Recruits volunteers for Community Outdoor Adventure Programing

Equipment Maintenance & Repair:

  • Assist the Director of Community Programs in gear inventory
  • Organize and prepare equipment prior to each program
  • Recover, clean and store equipment after each program
  • Repair broken or damaged items as needed

Trail Building

  • Serve in partnership with community volunteers to develop trails at various hub locations
  • Aid with the organization of tools and gear associated with trail building
  • Assist Land Steward to ensure trails are marked and mapped appropriately at hub sites

Event Support

  • Course marking
  • Race timing
  • Preparation & Break down

Reporting/ Documentation

  • Tracks  program attendance
  • Logs participant activity
  • Administers surveys

Academic and experience qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a US Citizen, national, or legal resident
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check
  • Political advocacy, organizing or demonstrating during service hours, or while perceived to be on duty, is prohibited
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrated experience in adventure based programming
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, oral and presentation skills
  • Experience working with youth (5-17)
  • Willingness to accomplish tasks outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, track details essential to project completion, analyze information for its relevance and impact and meet deadlines
  • Competence using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Flexible schedule (some evenings and weekends required)

Desired functions:

  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, training provided as needed
  • Ability to drive a four wheel drive truck and cargo trailer


1700-hour Rural AmeriCorps members will receive a monthly living allowance of $1,248 per month, as well as mileage reimbursement. Other benefits include health insurance, a wide range of training and networking opportunities, and an AmeriCorps education award of $6,095 upon successful completion of service. Some members may also be eligible for student loan forbearance and childcare reimbursement.  Midcoast Conservancy is committed to keeping housing costs low and will help Members find shared housing that costs $300/month or less (plus utilities).

Service schedule:  40-hour week, typically Tuesday-Saturday, with frequent evenings.

Service conditions:

  • Service involves frequent daytime travel in the Midcoast Region to Hub sites up to one hour away.
  • Service is 25% office and 75% field, facilitating outdoor adventure programming, community events, and meeting with community members.

Physical, Emotional and Intellectual Demands

  • An ability to share one’s passion for Midcoast Conservancy’s mission through Adventure Programming.
  • Flexibility, problem solving, and trial and error will be required to continue to improve programming and reach new volunteers.
  • Willingness to be outside in varying conditions (heat, cold, blackflies) is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry loads of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to ride a two wheeled bike.

The Outdoor Adventure Member’s support will continue to build Midcoast Conservancy’s capacity to connect people who live, play, and work in the region with its beauty by growing and maintaining our network of outdoor adventure volunteers, relationships with the communities that we serve, and opportunities for youth and families to adventure outdoors across the region.
