Regional Field Team Crew Coordinator

Highlights

 The Regional Field Team Crew Coordinator is 40 hours/week for 20 weeks (April 29 to September 13 preferred). Compensation is $14.75 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement.  Availability and use of reliable personal vehicle is required.

General Desciption

The Regional Field Team (RFT) is a collaboration between four organizations: The Nature Conservancy, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, Phippsburg Land Trust and the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT). The RFT is hired and managed by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, and we are seeking a responsible, environmentally-minded candidate for our longer seasonal position, the RFT Crew Coordinator.

This is an outdoor-based position helping to maintain, monitor, and manage the protected lands and trails of the Kennebec Estuary region. The RFT will accomplish tasks on lands protected by four different organizations. The RFT Crew Coordinator position will be an excellent opportunity for networking and gaining hands-on land management experience. Since this is a longer-term position, emphasis will be placed on skill-building, leadership, and responsible recordkeeping.

Opportunities Provided by this Position

  • Become familiar with trail creation and maintenance, invasive species management, and use of GPS and ArcGIS.
  • Gain experience in leadership of work teams and volunteers, including safety principles and equipment preparation
  • Enhance plant identification skills, particularly for invasive plant species, and learn about natural community typing
  • Attend several training opportunities including invasive plant management workshops
  • Learn how to read surveys and navigate the boundaries of properties with map, compass, and GPS
  • Gain hands-on experience with the  planning, construction, and maintenance of trails
  • Become familiar with essential property documentation, including management plans, deeds, conservation easements, and conservation easement baselines
  • Develop skills in observation and reporting
  • Experience the structure and operation of not-for-profit land trusts, attending planning sessions and committee meetings
  • Spend most of the summer working in the beautiful natural areas of the Maine Coast!

Supervision and Team Design

The RFT Crew Coordinator will work under the direction of the KELT Stewardship Coordinator, and once fully trained will often have the responsibility of leading and documenting the day’s work, guiding the efforts of our Summer Land Steward (a 10-week position) and of volunteers when available. The KELT Stewardship Coordinator will train and guide the RFT in the field as needed, and will meet regularly with the team to plan activities. For some tasks, the RFT will work directly with staff or volunteers from organizations other than KELT. Solo work may be required at times.

Regional Field Team members will frequently meet visitors on our properties. The RFT Crew Coordinator will be expected to act professionally and communicate in a polite manner, both with the public and with fellow team members.

Responsibilities

  • Help to plan and equip stewardship activities, and communicate with volunteers ahead of workdates.
  • Orient and lead volunteer crews, and guide the activities of the seasonal interns (early June to mid August).
  • Conduct trail maintenance with loppers, hand-saws, pole trimmers, string trimmers and hedgetrimmers.
  • Build bog bridges, steps, and other trail structures. Maintain trail signage and paint blazing.
  • Observe preserve conditions, create detailed reports of problem areas, and assist with property documentation.
  • Collect data with GPS units and use ArcGIS to create maps for presentation or documentation.
  • Traverse property boundaries to maintain signage and check for encroachment.
  • Assist with occasional clean-up of illicit dumping sites.
  • Conduct mechanical control of invasive plants, and assist with chemical controls after safety and procedure training.
  • Track and report accurately on accomplished tasks from each day’s activities.

Preferred Education

Completed college degree or equivalent experience in land management, environmental science, or a related field. Please note that the term of this position ideally begins at the end of April – it may not be possible for current students. If you are not available for an April 29 start date, please let us know in your cover letter what date you could start.

Necessary Skills

  • Driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable personal transportation (Occasional use of personal vehicle required)
  • Written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to create clear, organized written reports.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40lbs over rough ground.
  • Willingness to work in sometimes adverse conditions including heat, cold, rain, biting insects, and difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to lead work teams in a professional manner, including school groups, interns, and a variety of volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly, using and supervising the use of hand tools and power tools.
  • Polite professionalism when speaking to the public on behalf of the regional organizations.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong interest in an environmental career path.
  • Environmental or ecological background knowledge.
  • Plant identification skills, or familiarity with natural community typing.
  • Map, compass, and GPS skills.
  • Knowledge or experience of trail-building or trail maintenance techniques.
  • Chainsaw or other power equipment experience.
  • Experience with invasive plant management.
  • First aid certification(s) or safety trainings.
  • Experience working outdoors, particularly on trails or in backcountry areas.
  • Experience leading teams, volunteers, or employees.
  • Experience communicating with the public or representing an organization.
