Gear Steward (temporary)

Salary: $95.00 to $110.00 /day

Rippleffect is seeking individuals who have experience working with youth in varied outdoor education settings for our Gear Steward position. Rippleffect is excited to expand our team to support our growing program offerings.

Who We Are: Rippleffect is a non-profit youth and community development organization, serving over 4,000 youth annually. We own Cow Island, a beautiful 26-acre eco-campus in Casco Bay, Maine, where we run many of our youth and adult programs. Our mission is to promote youth development and leadership through adventure, healthy communities and living sustainably.

The Position: The Rippleffect Gear Steward is a member of an integrated team that supports Rippleffects adventure and experiential education programming on Cow Island. The Operations team is a group of dedicated staff that includes the Operations Manager, Infrastructure Manager, Boat Captains, Stewards and Volunteers. Being on the operations team means taking pride in the work, the team is not afraid to take on any task, big or small, and are dedicated to Rippleffects mission. This position will include long days, heavy lifting, and non glamorous work. However, at the end of the day, this work is very rewarding.

The Gear Steward is the direct assistant of the Operations Manager. Maintaining integrity of Rippleffect program equipment. Assuring equipment and gear is clean, ready for use and well maintained. Gear storage areas are clean and organized.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Preparing expedition pack out and pack in procedures for Rippleffect expedition programs. Ensuring that every group leaving and returning to Cow Island via kayaks has a clear gear issue and de-issue plan.
  • Ensure Rippleffect guides are supported with well maintained kayaks and associated equipment.
  • Support all other operations staff in maintaining integrity of Island infrastructure systems.
  • Responsibly drive and maintain island support vehicles
  • Occasional support and maintenance and care of cow island- our 26 acre eco-campus, including but not limited to: mowing, trail maintenance, care and cleaning of our composting toilet facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Positive Attitude
  • Deep understanding of outdoor recreation equipment, specifically: kayaks, stoves and tents
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self Starter
  • Autonomous work ethic
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly

Minimum Qualifications (Continued):

  • High School Diploma
  • Current driver's license
  • Ability to work some weekends


Rippleffects Island season runs from June to October with July-September as the busiest months. Shoulder season work is scheduled as needed based on programmatic needs. Expect to be full time mid June through September.

Schedule would be Monday-Friday

Compensation: $95 -$110 daily based on experience. We also provide workers’ compensation insurance, equipment discounts and high quality staff training.
