Island Steward (temporary)

Salary: $95.00 to $110.00 /day

Rippleffect is seeking individuals who have experience working with youth in varied outdoor education settings for our Island Steward position. Rippleffect is excited to expand our team to support our growing program offerings.

Who We Are: Rippleffect is a non-profit youth and community development organization, serving over 4,000 youth annually. We own Cow Island, a beautiful 26-acre eco-campus in Casco Bay, Maine, where we run many of our youth and adult programs. Our mission is to promote youth development and leadership through adventure, healthy communities and living sustainably.

The Position: The Rippleffect Island Steward is a member of an integrated team that supports Rippleffects adventure and experiential education programming on Cow Island. The Island Steward is a member of the Operations Team. The Operations team is a group of dedicated staff that includes the Operations Manager, Infrastructure Manager, Boat Captains, Stewards and Volunteers. Being on the operations team means that one takes pride in their work, they are not afraid to take on any task, big or small, and are dedicated to Rippleffects mission. This position will include long days, heavy lifting, and non glamorous work. However, at the end of the day, this work is very rewarding.

The Island Steward is supervised by the Operations Manager. This is a four day position occuring Friday through Monday.

Primary Responsibilities:

This position has these primary areas of responsibility. General, Kitchen, and Events

General:

*Each morning the Island Steward will complete “rounds” which consists of

ensuring bathrooms are clean and water is available at all program sites.

  • Manage trash and recycling systems
  • Manage sanitary systems
  • Manage laundry, washing and drying. Work with staff to ensure proper use and care
  • Care and manage food compost systems
  • Ensure Cow Island landscape is maintained to the highest quality
  • Assist the Infrastructure Manager with maintenance projects as needed
  • Manage island garden
  • Work with Operations staff to ensure program equipment is ready for use
  • Responsibly drive and maintain island support vehicles

Kitchen:

  • Meal set up and break down
  • Dishwashing support for kitchen and participants
  • Food prep
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen facilities
  • Harvesting crops for kitchen use
  • Ensuring food is transported from mainland to island

Events:

  • Food Service
  • Event site prep including table settings and basic decorating
  • Bussing, running and serving food as needed

Qualifications :

  • Restaurant or catering experience
  • Strong work ethic
  • Positive attitude
  • Willingness to do tasks outside of job description at a moments notice
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs safely and regularly
  • Ability to multitask
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to operate landscaping equipment i.e. lawn mowers, weed whackers, and chainsaws
  • Current driver's license

Timing:

Rippleffects Island season runs from May to October with July/August as the busiest months. Shoulder season work is scheduled as needed based on programmatic needs. Expect to be full time mid June through September. This is a four day position occuring Friday through Monday.

Compensation: $95-110 Daily based on experience. We also provide workers’ compensation insurance, equipment discounts and high quality staff training.
