Fisheries Biologist

Stantec seeks an entry-level fisheries biologist to join our Environmental Services team to primarily conduct and support baseline studies and sampling programs focused on fisheries and aquatic resources. Our Environmental Services group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. We provide integrated, multidisciplinary services to identify and assess liabilities and risks, and to develop solutions to site management, remediation, and mitigation. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in botany, ecology, fisheries biology, forestry, GIS, habitat and ecosystem restoration, environmental monitoring and risk assessment, hydrogeology, hydrology, information management, permitting and compliance, soil science, state and federal permitting, regulatory negotiation, storm water permitting and planning, wetland science, and wildlife biology. 

Your Key Responsibilities 

  • The successful candidate will be expected to follow detailed field sampling plans and assist with developing sampling plans, proposals and report writing. 
  • Candidates should expect to travel for day trips or week-long assignments throughout New England and beyond. Working long hours, outside, in variable weather conditions is typical for this position. 
  • The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, a good sense of humor, a strong work ethic and a desire to learn new skills. 


Stantec has a small company feel that provides local services yet has offices worldwide and thus provides the opportunity for travel and expanding personal horizons and professional experience. This position provides an opportunity to work with and learn from our network of professional scientists and biologists and will focus on fisheries resources but also support a variety of terrestrial and aquatic natural resource surveys. 

Your Capabilities 

  • Experience identifying freshwater and/or marine fish species 
  • Experience using fisheries sampling techniques (electrofishing, gill-netting, seining, trapping etc.). A candidate with radio telemetry, pit-tagging, and/or acoustic experience is especially desired 
  • SCUBA certification and experience especially desired 
  • Must be able to work well both independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams 
  • Strong technical writing abilities and verbal communication skills 
  • Willingness to assist/learn other field work skillsets, including GPSing, assisting with wetland/vernal pool surveys, water and sediment sampling and post-construction bird/bat monitoring surveys 
  • High ethical standards for professional scientific work 
  • Strong work ethic and desire for your team to succeed, a good sense of humor, and enthusiasm for field work in various field conditions 
  • A flexible schedule with a willingness to travel, including extended overnight travel across New England and the United States 
  • Valid driver’s license 


Education and Experience 

  • A bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in fisheries, environmental science or natural resource management or a Masters of Science (M.S.) in those areas is preferred 
  • 1-3 years of experience with a M.S. or 2-5 years of experience with a B.S. with direct work experience in freshwater fisheries/aquatic ecology/marine science or other relevant experience
