Position Abstract: Moose Mountains Regional Greenways is seeking a full time (40hr/wk) Land Agent to manage land conservation and stewardship duties of the organization. This is an exciting opportunity to have a strong hand in crafting and implementing a comprehensive vision and program from the ground up in a growing and energetic organization. Applicants should have experience with land conservation and stewardship work, incredible attention to detail and superior communication and people skills in working with landowners, stakeholders and other members of the public and partner organizations. This position will work closely with both the Executive Director and the Stewardship and Lands Committee in meeting the organization’s conservation goals as outlined in the conservation action plan and the strategic plan.

Land Agent will be a full time, non-exempt employee at 40 hr/wk with eligibility for health insurance and retirement benefits and reimbursement for mileage. The salary for this position will start at $40,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. This position will be required to attend regular and one-time meetings outside of a normal 9-5 work schedule, including on some evenings and weekends.

LAND AGENT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Land Acquisition Activities

The Land Agent will be responsible for initiating new projects as well as for juggling multiple conservation projects at once in various stages of their completion from identification to closing and ongoing stewardship. The Land Agent will serve as the primary point of contact and project manager for all land projects from start to completion, in coordination with the Board of Directors, Executive Director and others.

Land Stewardship Activities

The Land Agent will be responsible for coordinating and managing the work of the Stewardship and Lands Committee as well as Land Steward Volunteers. The Land Agent will be responsible for tracking annual monitoring of properties, record keeping of all monitoring visits and additional duties that may be required to adequately steward lands and negotiate infractions. The Land Agent will be responsible for overseeing any routine or one-time maintenance, management or restoration projects that occur on MMRG fee-owned or easement properties.

LTA Compliance and Review Activities

The Land Agent will work diligently to gain accreditation with the LTA and to maintain that accreditation in future years. The Land Agent will address compliance issues wherever they arise.

Other Duties:

  • Work in close coordination with Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Stewardship and Lands Committee to craft a comprehensive vision and program for conservation that is strategic and proactive, taking into account conservation priorities as well as the need for public access lands that have the ability to increase access/activities and drive membership growth.
  • Identify opportunities for trail development on existing or future projects and incorporate the goal of increased public access into conservation projects
  • Develop and host educational workshops for landowners and the public regarding conservation, i.e. how private lands are conserved
  • Build strong relationships in the local community including with lake associations, conservation commissions, town planning boards and others
  • Assist the organization with other tasks and events as is reasonable and appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in natural resources or related field
  • Work experience (3-5yrs) in a related field or position
  • Drivers license and access to a working vehicle
  • Basic computer skills – Microsoft office suite, google suite, dropbox

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in real estate transactions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience in contract or other negotiations
  • Experience with ARCview GIS, knowledge of GIS software
  • Experience in navigating public records databases (tax maps, registry of deeds etc)
  • Comfort navigating wooded areas and properties

Working Conditions:

This position requires both in-office and outdoor work responsibilities. Applicants should be able to sit at a desk for several hours at a time as well as feel comfortable navigating outdoor, wooded settings where marked trails may not be accessible. Outdoor work activities may take place in cold or inclement weather. Seated work may take place in a home office and/or in a communal office setting.
