Full-time, year-round stewardship position on Deer Isle, Maine. Benefits include paid vacation and holidays.

 

SUMMARY

The Land Steward will be responsible for the management of IHT’s stewardship program including the management of IHT’s fee-owned conservation properties. This position reports to the Executive Director, collaborates with IHT committees & volunteers, and works with other partner agencies and organizations on land projects. This position is an excellent opportunity for a motivated stewardship professional who has a love for conservation and a desire to work in our office and out in the Deer Isle-Stonington Community.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Land Steward is accountable for implementing IHT’s Stewardship Program.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting the annual monitoring of IHT conservation easements and fee-owned properties in compliance with IHT policy and Land Trust Alliance Accreditation Standards & Practices
  • Ensuring that strong relationships with owners and neighbors of conservation properties are in place
  • Responsibility for fee land management tasks including invasive plant removal, boundary maintenance, upkeep of trails and infrastructure, and other as required
  • Work with IHT Land Committee on easement or fee acquisition priorities and opportunities in compliance with IHT policy and Land Trust Alliance Accreditation Standards & Practices
  • Quantify existing and future needs of conservation properties and develop long term strategies
  • Collaborate with IHT Stewardship Committee, including development of annual Stewardship Budget request

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  • BA/BS in a related field and experience in conservation, land management or related preferred
  • Ability to work outside and perform physical labor in year round conditions and be outdoors for considerable periods
  • Ability to organize and work with community volunteers on trails and other projects
  • Willingness to conduct an occasional program in support of the Walks & Talks schedule
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required, including to remote and undeveloped locations either hiking/wading through a variety of conditions or on a boat; Must possess reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed)
  • Ability to implement a high standard in the upkeep of preserve infrastructure and appearance
  • Knowledge of trail building and maintenance and experience with the tools required
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and community members
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, deal with logistic challenges, and meet project timelines
  • Computer proficiency and ability to maintain stewardship digital and hard files
  • Ability to administer stewardship program from a desk & computer or in meetings as required
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with landowners, the public, partner organizations, and municipal and governmental agencies

 

Skills & Experience Desired

  • Skill with MS Office and computer–based GIS; Experience with GIS field technology a plus
  • Experience writing baseline & current condition documentation, monitoring reports, and other Land Trust related work
  • Boating experience; Personal boat for monitoring islands a plus (reimbursed)
