Hours: July 8th – August 16th, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. 

Compensation: $14.50-$16.00/hr

Join Viles Arboretum staff for an exciting opportunity working with youth in the Maine outdoors! Viles Arboretum’s Outdoor Discovery Camps provides a safe and engaging day-camp experience for both staff and campers. This is a great opportunity for those looking to explore the field of outdoor recreation or environmental education. Summer Camp Counselor’s work under the direction of the Director of Research and Education to prepare, execute and clean up after summer camp programs at Viles Arboretum. They are responsible for keeping children engaged and safe during camp hours.

Duties:

  • Lead and support campers as they participate in age-appropriate environmental education activities.
  • Assist with the development of activities, materials and outcomes in collaboration with team leaders. 
  • Monitor campers to ensure compliance with camp rules and prevent accidents.
  • Cleaning, maintaining and ensuring proper use of camp facilities and equipment.
  • Reporting and recording details of incidents, such as accidents or rule violations, to parents and camp staff.
  • Memorizing all emergency procedures and enforcing camp rules.

Requirements:

  • Experience working in camps, with children, or with specific activities may be preferred.
  • Physical ability to participate in activities, run, climb, swim, lift, or support the weight of
  • children.
  • Ability to pass a background check and a physical
  • High level of responsibility and accountability.
  • Upbeat, engaging personality.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Preference to first aid/cpr certified
