Saco Valley Land Trust is seeking a part-time Event and Outreach organizer to assist the land trust to grow its community reach. Perfect for an organized, reliable person seeking supplemental employment or retirement income, applicants should have enthusiasm for or experience in land conservation or environmental concerns.

This contract-based position is grant-funded for one year at 10 hours/week, and may be renewed or extended. The schedule is flexible, but includes mandatory participation at weekend events once dates are identified (approximately 8/year). Compensation is competitive at about $20-$25 per hour, dependent on applicant capabilities.

The land trust is seeking someone who lives in Biddeford, Saco or Buxton and is familiar with the area. The applicant must be able to start soon (ideally December 2022) and plan to complete a full year with the organization. Extensions beyond one year will be dependent on performance and on available grant funding.


With 10 hours per week, time management and prioritization will be important skills. The position’s responsibilities will vary each week, but in general will fall into these categories:

50%: Event Management
This will include working with board members to plan events; scheduling presenters and securing event venues; publicizing events though press releases, social media posts, community calendars and other means; and participating in or hosting events for the public. SVLT plans at least 10 events per year, including lectures, workshops, outdoor volunteer workdays, and volunteer training events. These events will often be held on weekend days.

20% Business Membership Program Implementation
Reach out to local businesses to encourage participation in our Business Sustaining Membership program with a goal of five new businesses committed to annual support by the end of 2023. Ensure business logos and links are maintained on the land trust website (WordPress).

15% Social Media Upkeep
Post appropriate social media communications about events, accomplishments, people, and nature observations – at least one post every two weeks on Facebook. Take photos at events to use in future outreach.

10% General Promotion
Raising awareness about SVLT’s work through press outlets, advertisement, signage, and other general outreach.

5% Reporting
Attend at least part of most SVLT board meetings (first Thursday evening of the month, generally), and report to the board verbally and in writing.

Qualifications and Skills:

General Traits:
The ideal candidate will be personable and engaging, comfortable communicating with business owners, potential land trust donors, land trust directors, and members of the public in a friendly, professional manner.

Candidate must be able to pursue required tasks in a timely fashion – an organized work style is critical to success of the position.

Applicants should have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of Facebook
  • Willingness to learn to work with the SVLT website (WordPress)
  • Excellent writing skills to be able to craft press releases and posts
  • Ability to work effectively with only light guidance
  • Personal vehicle for travel to events/land trust properties
  • Capable home computer and mobile phone
  • Ability participate in on-and off-trail hikes and other outdoor events

Preferred candidates may have:

  • At least 1 year of work experience in which event management was a responsibility, with good references
  • Prior experience with land trusts or environmental non-profits
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Familiarity with non-profit donor management or fundraising

Location and Travel:
Some work can be done remotely, but travel will be expected to event and meeting locations in Saco, Biddeford, and Buxton. As SVLT does not have an office, applicants are asked to provide their own work premises and computer/phone equipment. Work time is flexible except for scheduled events, which will sometimes occur on nights/weekends.

This is a part-time, contracted position, with no benefits offered. Starting compensation will be between $20 and $25/hour dependent on initial qualifications.
