The Stewardship Coordinator is a full-time permanent position based in the greater Skowhegan area coordinating land stewardship and management for Somerset Woods Trustees and Pierce Pond Watershed Trust.  The Coordinator is an employee of Somerset Woods Trustees, and reports to its Executive Director. 

Somerset Woods Trustees (SWT) is a land trust serving southern Somerset County with a rapidly growing, diverse portfolio of conserved lands and programs.  The Stewardship Coordinator will play a key role in the management and restoration of our conserved lands. Work with SWT will be year-round and account for 80 percent of the position.  

Pierce Pond Watershed Trust (PPWT)  is a land trust dedicated to the conservation of the Pierce Pond Watershed, a remote 12,000-acre watershed. Pierce Pond is in a remote location with the nearest towns about a one-hour drive away. Travel within the watershed is by boat and foot. Accommodations while working at Pierce Pond will likely be a rustic cabin. Work with PPWT will account for 20 percent of the position, working on average 2 days/week for 6 months of the year.   

The successful applicant will have core competencies in:

Land Stewardship: Enhance our ability to care for the lands we conserve and showcase to our local communities.

Volunteer Engagement: Bolster community engagement and volunteer activity to expand our capacity to accomplish our stewardship goals.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Conduct easement monitoring and landowner communications
  • Assist in the implementation of preserve management plans, including invasive species management 
  • Enhance and maintain trail systems and campsites 
  • Assist with water quality and fisheries monitoring and research 
  • Serve as a community liaison to cultivate positive relationships, build support, elevate general understanding of the trusts’ missions and role of the preserves, and promote appropriate use
  • Help facilitate organization-wide efforts to expand membership and volunteer programs
  • Collaborate with other SWT staff on development of a community firewood program
  • Assist with trusts’ public education programs
  • Recruit, train and supervise interns and/or seasonal staff and volunteers when authorized
  • The Somerset Woods staff is a team, and we will all need to assist with certain administrative and outreach items, including but not limited to: 
    • Occasional weekend work
    • Staff support for special events 
    • Coordination of monthly Stewardship Committee meetings, and attendance at Board of Directors meetings if requested

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree and at least 2 years’ experience in conservation, wildlife ecology, environmental studies, land conservation, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of mapping, including ArcGIS, Google Earth and GPS and the ability to produce engaging maps for all audiences  
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive relations and to interact with a wide variety of people
  • Ability and willingness to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations (including short stays in a remote cabin) on difficult terrain and under physically demanding circumstances
  • Ability to operate a motor boat
  • Ability to safely use hand tools and small machinery, tractor experience a plus
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated skill in managing multiple projects and consistently meeting deadlines
  • Valid Maine drivers’ license and reliable vehicle

This is a full-time, year-round position. Annual salary will be in the range of $46,000-$52,000, depending on experience. Benefits include generous paid time off, retirement plan match, and a flexible work schedule. Periodic work on weekends and evenings required. Work-related mileage will be reimbursed.  Start date is flexible.
