Service Area
Washington and Hancock Counties – Union River to St. Croix River. The primary focus of DSF’s work is in the five Washington County watersheds that continue to support genetically distinct populations of endangered Atlantic salmon: the Narraguagus River, Pleasant River, Machias River, East Machias River, and Dennys River. We provide advocacy and support for fish conservation throughout Maine and New England.
Key Facts
Established in 1982, the Downeast Salmon Federation conserves the endangered Atlantic salmon and sea-run fish populations in Downeast Maine. We take a holistic approach to conservation. In addition to our fish hatcheries, we actively monitor fish populations, restore fish passage and habitats along rivers and streams, and manage a growing land trust.
- Education & outreach from the East Machias Aquatic Resource Center (EMARC).
- DSF stewards 6,145 acres of fee lands and conservation easements along 76 miles of river and stream. Land protection focuses on riparian fish habitat. DSF Preserves not only help protect habitat and water quality for sea-run fish but also provide the public with access to healthy rivers and streams and outdoor recreation opportunities.
- DSF operates two wild Atlantic salmon hatcheries, the Peter Gray Hatchery on the East Machias River and the Pleasant River Hatchery in Columbia Falls.
- DSF regularly advocates for sustainable sea-run fisheries, removing obstructions to fish migration, and restoring habitat using a community based approach which includes strong local partnerships and community involvement.
