Join us in caring for the lands that connect our community
Kittery Land Trust (KLT) has protected and manages over 1,000 acres of conserved land—from beloved community trails to working landscapes and scenic natural areas. As we continue to grow, we’re entering an exciting new chapter: transitioning from an all-volunteer stewardship program to a staff-led model with a dedicated Stewardship Manager at the helm.
If you’re someone who loves being outdoors, working with people, and making a tangible impact on the land, we’d love to meet you.
Position Overview
The Stewardship Manager plays a central role in caring for KLT’s conserved lands and strengthening our connection to the community. Working closely with our Stewardship Committee, volunteers, and local partners, this position helps ensure our properties are well-maintained, thoughtfully managed, and welcoming for all.
This is a hands-on role that blends field work, project coordination, and community engagement. The Stewardship Manager will lead efforts to assess and prioritize stewardship needs, implement property management plans, and build a strong, engaged volunteer base.
What You’ll Do
Property Stewardship

- Develop and implement property management plans
- Coordinate and grow KLT’s volunteer stewardship community, serving as the primary point of contact
- Lead and support stewardship projects alongside volunteers and community groups, including:
- Trail building and maintenance, bridges, kiosks, and parking areas
- Signage installation and upkeep
- Invasive species management
- Oversee seasonal property maintenance (mowing, plowing, etc.)
- Develop property use policies (e.g., hunting, biking, foraging) for Board approval
- Help educate visitors about responsible land use
- Contribute to stewardship grant proposals and reports
- Prepare and manage the annual stewardship budget
Property Monitoring
- Coordinate annual monitoring of easements and fee-owned lands
- Review monitoring reports for accuracy and completeness
- File required state and Land for Maine’s Future reports
- Work collaboratively to resolve encroachments with abutters
- Train and support volunteer monitors
- Build and maintain positive relationships with easement landowners
Community & Organizational Support
- Lead Stewardship Committee meetings
- Organize and host volunteer workdays
- Attend trainings and workshops to strengthen KLT’s stewardship program
- Support KLT events and community outreach as needed
- Maintain organized stewardship records (digital and hard copy)
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in land stewardship, natural resource management, and/or trail/outdoor recreation management (degree preferred)
- Comfort with hands-on, physical outdoor work in a variety of conditions
- Basic carpentry and trail-building skills
- Strong organizational, communication, and volunteer leadership skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, databases)
- Flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends
Work Environment
